Cannabis Business License

A business license is issued by the state to any person who intends to engage in the sale of cannabis products. A business license is not required if the business is operating under a federal permit. If the business is located in a city or county where recreational use is legal, then the business may apply for a local business license.

1. Employer Identification Number (EIN)

An employer identification number (EIN) is a unique identifier assigned to each business entity by the Internal Revenue Service. An EIN is used to identify businesses for tax purposes. You can find out whether you need an EIN by contacting the IRS at 1-800-829-4933.

2. Federal Tax ID Number

A federal tax ID number is a nine-digit number that identifies a taxpayer’s account with the Internal Revenue Service. A federal tax ID number is issued to individuals and corporations that file taxes. To obtain a federal tax ID number, contact the IRS at 1-877-829-5500.

3. State Sales Tax Permit

In some states, sales tax permits are required to sell cannabis products. Contact your state department of revenue for information about obtaining a sales tax permit.

4. Medical Marijuana Card

If you have been diagnosed with a qualifying medical condition, you may qualify for a medical marijuana card. Check with your doctor to determine if you qualify.

5. Recreational Use Licenses

Recreational use licenses are issued by the state to allow adults 21 years old and older to possess, consume, and cultivate cannabis. These licenses do not cover retail sales.

6. Social Security Number

Your social security number is a ten-digit number used to track income earned by employees. Your social security number is issued by the U.S. government and is valid for life.
